CASE STUDY: Wind Turbines - A Renewable Energy Project

renewables-case-study-turbine.jpgEstablished in 1996, Farmers and Mercantile is one of the leading independent insurance brokerages in England specialising in agriculture. Managing Director Nigel Wellings is eager to achieve carbon neutral status and instructed Samuel Rose in early June 2010 to project manage the installation of a wind turbine to generate power to the offices at Thistledown Barn, Sywell.

After investigation, the most suitable turbine for Thistledown Barn was a Gaia 11 kW (18 m) with a lattice tower which would generate an estimated 27,600 kWh of electricity a year. Once planning permission had been received, Samuel Rose managed the wind turbine installation. The initial stages involved obtaining quotes and assisting the client to obtain the appropriate finance. Once details had been finalised, we supervised the ground works and delivery and erection of the turbine which took place on 25 August 2010, just 10 weeks after the initial instruction.

The final stage of the process was to establish which electricity supplier offered the best Feed-inTariff (FiT) deal and then complete the FiT application form (see snippet on previous page) on behalf of the client, which included registering the turbine with OFGEM.

Whilst the renewable power project for Thistledown Barn is in its infancy (a biomass boiler may also be installed), Farmers and Mercantile is very pleased with the turbine and the efficient service provided. Benefits can already be seen as they are one step closer to carbon neutral status and the project will also give them reduced electricity bills and a greener corporate image.

At Samuel Rose, our specialist expertise in renewables has led to us being instrumental in the financial decision-making and planning processes for small (11 kW) turbines; highlighting the investment and rental opportunities on medium- sized (330 kW) turbines and negotiating collaboration agreements and options with operators on behalf of our clients for large-scale wind farms.

If you have a requirement for a wind turbine or simply would like a chat about the opportunities that a turbine could offer you, please contact Jack Merry on 01604 782708.

The turbine at Thistledown Barn can be seen from the road between Sywell and the A43; if you are very interested we could arrange for you to see the turbine close up.
